Three Tips to Ensure a Healthy Second Trimester

The second trimester, which occurs between 13 and 28 weeks, is widely considered the most comfortable stage of a pregnancy due to both an increase in daytime energy and a decrease in symptoms. Many women experience better sleep and begin to feel the movement of their baby midway through this period. However, maintaining a healthy lifestyle remains crucial for the well-being of the mother and the development of the baby.

Here are few tips for promoting a healthy second trimester:
1. Track key dates.
Keep a journal of key events, such as prenatal visits and an anomaly scan - a detailed ultrasound that checks the unborn child for signs of physical abnormalities. While optional, the scan can help mothers determine any special care their child might need and begin preparations prior to the birth.
2. Maintain a healthy diet.
While specific dietary needs vary, foods like avocado, dried fruit, and Greek yogurt contain important nutrients for a healthy pregnancy. On the other hand, pregnant women should avoid foods with the potential for bacteria:
a. raw or undercooked eggs such as over-easy, soft boiled, rather than just eggs,
b. unpasteurized soft cheeses,
c. uncooked sushi or sashimi,
d. raw sprouts such as eggs, raw meat, and unpasteurized milk products.
3. Use natural-based cleaners.
Exposure to chemicals from chemical-based cleaning products poses a threat to pregnant women and their unborn children. Although it is possible to limit exposure through proper ventilation, you can avoid the risk altogether by switching to natural-based alternatives such as vinegar, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide.
